America Counts

America Counts (AC) is a federally funded tutoring program administered by the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center. The program is currently being developed with the intention on working to improve children’s mathematical skills, confidence and attitude.

Our mission is to:

• Provide personal attention and additional learning time for students.
• Increase student comprehension and ability to solve mathematics through one on one tutoring with a trained CMU student tutor.
• Improve student’s attitude toward mathematics through a supportive and positive mentoring relationship with their tutor.
• Create an opportunity for college students to take the role of a teacher and to be a catalyst in the learning of a child.

To ensure development of best practices, the pilot program will be developed though the fall semester of 11-12 and tutors will be placed in the spring. This program is being offered due to Michigan Campus Compact’s Venture grant and from a in kind match of the Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center.
