Court Support Volunteer

This volunteer opportunity is an ongoing one. This is a perfect opportunity for an individual who needs to satisfy community service hours for a class or for a student needing to do an internship. Ideally this opportunity requires a 3-6 month minimum commitment.

This volunteer opportunity is available Monday thru Friday, 8am-5pm.

Individuals who volunteer as a Court Support Volunteer assist clients in filing petitions for Orders of Protection, provide information about court dates and times, attend court proceedings with clients, and explain court matters such as arraignments, preliminary examinations, trials and sentencing to victims.

Volunteers are encouraged to contact the Volunteer Coordinator @ (989) 399-0007, ext 105 to discuss this and other volunteer opportunities. Volunteers are required to submit a completed Volunteer Services Application and must consent to background checks. Volunteer Orientation is the second Friday of every month from 2:00-4:30pm at Underground Railroad, Inc located at 1230 S. Washington Ave. Saginaw, MI 48601. Training for this volunteer opportunity would occur while one is working with the Personal Protection Order Office Advocates.

*Individuals interested in volunteering cannot currently be receiving services from Underground Railroad, Inc.

The services offered by the Personal Protection Order Office include advocacy and support for vicitims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking as they navigate the court system.

Advocacy Volunteer/Intern

**As an Advocacy Volunteer/Intern one would work along side a victim's advocate in helping victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking find a safe place to stay, secure financial resources, transportation, child care, healthcare and assist in offering a place where healing can begin.

This is an ongoing opportunity and is available Monday - Friday, 9am-5pm, evening hours are also available.

Volunteer Orientation is the second Friday of every month from 2:00-4:30pm at Underground Railroad, Inc located at 1230 S. Washington Ave. Saginaw, MI 48601. Interns are required to attend 40 hours of agency training. Students will train with the advocate they are placed with.

Stationary Food Pantry: Client Assistant

The new Stationary Food Pantry in Isabella County needs your help! Community Compassion Network and the Salvation Army have teamed up to create this new food resource to the Isabella County Community, and in 4 months of operations in 2011, over 1,100 families were served! While the pantry is primarily focused on the distribution of food and fighting hunger in the community, the vision of Community Compassion Network is that "All would be adequately fed, clothed, housed, and know the love of Christ." It is a faith based organization, but all are welcome to volunteer!

Volunteers have the opportunity to greet Guests, make them feel welcome, and distribute food to Guests by guiding them through the available food supplies. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to stock shelves, unload food trucks, sort toys for Christmas Outreach, and help with the upkeep of the Stationary Food Pantry. If a Volunteer prefers to do any one of these things they will be assigned the project.

Team Up With Youth...Moving On Middle School Mentoring Program

Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for volunteers to work with youth over the school year!

Teaming Up With Youth... Moving On is a middle school mentoring program for students who either come from broken homes, have difficulties fitting in with their peers, or are lacking positive role models in their lives. The program is designed to give these students a positive learning experience and provide them with opportunities that they may not be able to partake in, in everyday life; all while having a positive role model to grow alongside of.

Volunteers are expected to show up for each weekly program. They should be positive, upbeat individuals who enjoy working with children. Volunteers will participate in weekly activities alongside the student they will be matched with and should be open minded to all activities. They must also be able to provide themselves with transportation to and from the meeting site.

Art Reach School Volunteer

Since 1984 one of Art Reach's programs has been to provide an introduction to the fine arts for k-6th graders. Currently Art Reach serves 9000 children at 29 local elementary schools.

Volunteers are needed to go into classrooms once a month and provide about a half hour presentation on pieces of art ranging from cave art to modern art. Volunteers will be go into two classrooms back to back and present about the art pieces.

All art and information will be provided to the volunteers at the school. No previous knowledge on art is needed. Volunteers can learn along side the elementary school students about art.

Volunteers would have a set schedule every month, but with the opportunity to work it around your schedule. It would be about a three hour a month commitment. Before volunteers can go into the schools they will receive about an hour training.

Billboard Restoration Project Volunteer

The Clare Depot Preservation, INC. is trying to preserve a historic landmark, this depot is a one of a kind in its architectural design and we want to be able to use at least a portion of the building as a museum of the railroad in Michigan and the area and the depot itself. The railroad donated this billboard we are trying to recreate as its age has rendered it to be in pretty sad shape. It is about the car ferries in Michigan and we want it on the property with the depot when it is brought back to original quality.

This may take several people, but one or more may have to organize the artistic character of the project. It is more than just painting, although once drawn some may just be a careful painting job. This is for a historic project to preserve a piece of history for the community and the area in general. So a chance for students to be part of something very special, to last a lifetime. The old billboard is in pieces but available for copying.

Isabella Community Soup Kitchen

Emergency Food Pantry Volunteers

The Red Cross Emergency Food Pantry serves individuals and families who reside in Isabella County and who are in need of emergency food.

The Food Pantry is open Monday through Friday from 11 am to 3 pm. Volunteers are needed to pack food orders for clients helping them get items in their vehicle, count food donations and stock shelves. Carry items on stairs to either the storage area or to client service area. Volunteers should be able to lift 25 pounds.
There is also a need for volunteers to do client intake using agency developed program on our computer.
All volunteers must be able to work with people and serve them with respect and courtesy. Some computer skills are necessary for client intake position. Ability to follow directions and get along with others. Must have great follow through and show up and be ready to work at agreed time.

We do not prepare food on site but rather frozen and canned food is given to clients to take home and prepare for themselves. Clients may visit the pantry once every 30 days.

Barrier Breakers is a program of West Midland Family Center established to bridge the gap among community members by pairing those with need to those with means (a means to provide, a means to serve). Positive relationships are developed that bring enhanced honor, dignity and joy to both parties by recognizing the intrinsic value of all people. In working together, and sharing in gifts and relationship, individuals grow, making more meaningful contributions as citizens of their community.

We will be matching families to work together. We would like to have a data base that would keep data on individual families, keep track of the matches, and then track the results of the matches.

Barrier Breakers is in need of a Computer Science student to help create a database that would be used to track and match the families in the Barrier Breakers Program (a program of the West Midland Family Center). This would include elements of:

· Key information / metadata identified for sponsor and receiving families

· Process definition for data entry (family self-enrollment vs. centralized input)

· Database architecture / definition – including data privacy considerations

· Role based security considerations - who can access / change data vs. search

· Matching tool

We are looking for a data base creator for this project as soon as possible. Work would start as soon as we get a programmer. Our goal is to have the project up and running by the end of May.

Since 1984 one of Art Reach's programs has been to provide an introduction to the fine arts for k-6th graders. Currently Art Reach serves 9000 children at 29 local elementary schools.
