Safer Sex Patrol

The Safer Sex Patrol (SSP) is one of the many student volunteer programs run by the CMU Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center. SSP is devoted to educating the community about the importance of safer sex and abstinence as ways to decrease the risk of spreading sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
- SSP is committed to distributing both abstinence kits as well as condom kits.
- Each semester, there are 4 to 6 kit stuffings and 4 to 6 bar patrols. More information about these volunteering opportunities can be found on OrgSync.
- SSP has also partnered with CMU Residence Life and University Health Services to provide more sexual health programming on campus. SSP works with student organizations, too, including RSOs, fraternities, and sororities!
If you are a CMU Residence Life staff member or a member of a student organization who would like to request materials or programming support from SSP, please fill out the application below.
- If you have a date in mind, please make sure to submit this form at least 2 weeks in advance.
- The SSP Student Coordinator will follow up with you within 3 days.
If you are interested please fill out the form Safer Sex Patrol Programming Request Form.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you have to be 18 (or 21) to go on a bar patrol?
Do you have to bring your driver's license or state-issued ID?
Do you have to have a car to go on a bar patrol?
If the RSVP list on OrgSync is full, can I still come to the kit stuffing or patrol?
Do you have to be 18 (or 21) to go on a bar patrol?
No. Because we have made arrangements with the locals bars beforehand, volunteers do not need to be 18 (or 21) to participate in the bar patrols.
Do you have to bring your driver's license or state-issued ID?
Yes. While most bars do not card SSP volunteers, a few do. When that happens, volunteers who do not have their IDs or are not 21 cannot enter that particular bar.
Do you have to have a car to go on a bar patrol?
No, but if you have a car it helps if you bring it! Volunteers carpool on bar patrols, so the more cars and willing drivers the better.
SSP shirts are free for bar patrol volunteers and are the same for every patrol. So, if it's your first patrol, don't worry! You'll get a shirt when we meet at the Bovee UC. If it's your 2nd or 3rd patrol, please don't forget your shirt.
If the RSVP list on OrgSync is full, can I still come to the kit stuffing or patrol?
In order to make sure we can provide all SSP volunteers with quality service opportunities (and hours), we limit how many individuals can RSVP. If the RSVP list is full for a particular date, please sign up for the next kit stuffing or patrol. Or, since some individuals say they can attend and then change their RSVP, you can also try checking the RSVP list at a later time. Thank you for your enthusiasm!
